About two months ago, a question was posed to the Hillsong Stellenbosch Creative Team in what they envision for the team for 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The thought that I shared with the team, which kind of stuck around from that Thursday evening, was the idea of \u201cResting in the Restart\u201d. At that stage, I didn’t really unpack what I thought it would mean to be resting in the restart; however, the phrase kept coming up in my mind so much that I came to the conclusion that it was a prompting from the Holy Spirit that I should do a blog about it, and use \u201cResting in the Restart\u201d as the title for the blog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Hopefully when you reach the end of the blog, there may be personal revelations on what it means to you, to rest in the restart.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think the heart behind this blog entry is that most of the world is still finding themselves in some form of restrictive living conditions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and that a restart, of life in general, will take place in some shape or form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In South Africa, some types of businesses or industries, like the theatre and live performance industries, are still limited in their performances or the shows that they bring to stage due to the restrictions that are in place with regards to the amount of people that can gather at such events under Covid-19 regulations. The restart for such industries is a very slow one and there would be moments of \u201crest\u201d (where these industries can\u2019t operate to full capacity, for some time to come).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPlant and harvest your crops for six years, but let the land be renewed and lie uncultivated during the seventh year. Then let the poor among you harvest whatever grows on its own. Leave the rest for wild animals to eat. The same applies to your vineyards and olive groves.<\/em>\u201d – Exodus 23:10,11 – NLT<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

In these verses, the Jews are instructed to rest the land that they live off every seventh year for the period of a full year. This Sabbath Year is known in Jewish traditions as the Shmitta. For six years, they can work and plant on the same piece of land and live off the harvest of the land where they have planted, but the seventh year, the land must rest from all agricultural activities, before the restart cycle of a new 6 year cycle of planting and reaping starts.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This almost mirror, the law in the Torah with regards to the  weekly rest on Shabbat, where the Jews are instructed that for 6 days they are allowed to work, but on the seventh, they are not to work for it is a Holy (set apart) day of rest but to honour God, for God created everything in 6 days and He rested on the 7th day, according to the Biblical Narrative, found in Genesis 1 and 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have realised, whilst writing the last two paragraphs, that essentially the phases of lockdown that we have experienced in South Africa was in a way used by God to actually slow me down to a point of resting, and not just be in a fixed routine of a Monday to Friday, 8 to 5 career, into preparing on a Saturday for serving on the creative team on a Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though I find joy in being in this cycle – a dopamine rush in a way, it\u2019s very easy that you reach a point of burn-out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hardest thing of being involved with something like volunteering in church and impacting others in a positive uplifting way is that you do not find true rest in such a cycle, where you slow down and find your North-point on your inner compass. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the long run of just running this cycle over and over again, without proper times of rest, can lead to burn out – like a harvest going up in flames, which benefits neither the farmer nor the people that would have sustained themselves of the crop the farmlands has produced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I myself have gone through a cycle of burn-out before, when I was part of another church, a couple of years back. (At that stage in my life, I was still spiritually immature, maybe because I did not know or walked in a relationship with the Holy Spirit – that changed dramatically when I was immersed or baptised by the Holy Spirit years later. So a good way to grow spiritually, I guess, is to actually seek the Holy Spirit). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a year and a half after I stopped serving in that particular church, I found myself not plugged into a church community – partly because of burn-out, but also for taking on a victim mentality and taking offense on what people had said about me, and well, just having a pity party for myself (a sad occasion when I reflect on days gone by, but still God was able to use it).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am, however grateful that on one random Saturday in August 2013, that I randomly texted a friend of mine (maybe a God Prompting), to be my wingman, in attending a morning service at the Hillsong Church Century City church location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(It has happened before in 2008\/2009 that this particular friend of mine invited me to check out Hillsong Church when they still had services in the CTICC – Cape Town International Convention Centre, but at that stage I did not feel compelled to be fully planted in this church community, maybe because God already set my steps in motion to walk through the doors of the church in 2013).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So after visiting the church on that Sunday in August 2013, my friend I and I went back again the following Sunday morning. However, my friend could not make it the Sunday thereafter – maybe because of his studies, so I plucked up the courage to go to church on my own and am I glad I did!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually, I got planted at Hillsong Church Century City and stayed there for 5 years until, in 2018, I felt that God is calling me to be planted in Hillsong Stellenbosch. It is amazing to consider that when Covid-19 hit the shores of South Africa in 2020, that it is where I am planted in church  and that 2020 also was the 7th year being part of Hillsong Church in South Africa  – thus having my Sabbath year in 2020, where in lockdown to rest and outwork my creativity in a different form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One worthwhile nugget of gold that I can take into this next cycle of six years and respecting the seventh year of Sabbath rest  – for restoration of my being, is to put value in slowing down, then pausing, just to restart again afresh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let me explain…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 We live in a society where the normal dictates that everything happens instantaneously like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Instant coffee – It is not real coffee, but does help your digestive tract get a move on.<\/li>
  • Instant noodles – You will get some instant food gratification, but it does not necessarily mean that your body will get nutritional value from them.<\/li>
  • (Almost) instant drive though dinners – I have to admit, I do sometimes myself take the drive-through route for lunch and dinner.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Yet, looking at the food and drink analogy of above, I would say to really enjoy food and drink to its fullest, there is a timeous process involved – sometimes, you just have to lounge back and properly taste and smell the coffee, savouring every sip and tasting the unique flavours within the coffee bean roasting process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In the slowing down in 2020, (and continuing on into 2021), I realised that even though I am busy and productive during the work week, also serving my heart out on a Sunday, I must admit at times that even I struggled to maintain my relationship with God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    (To make it clear – I am secure in my belief that Jesus is the One that saved me from my sin and eternal death, so that through Him we can have a restored relationship with God.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There were times where I had enough time to properly dive deeper into God\u2019s Word (The Bible), to get to know Him and His character better, yet I got distracted, or procrastination crept in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Does it make me a bad Christian? <\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    Not at all. I wanted to say that it makes me \u201cnormal\u201d,  but if I did, it would just lower the bar on how I outlive my Christ-identity, which the world would say is acceptable, but as a Christian we ought to be not of this world (or living to a worldly standard), in spite of being in the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    If I become lazy to build my relationship with God, our enemy, the devil can use our laziness as a simple foothold in our lives to trip you up in your day to day lives, like if it becomes a habit of spending time streaming hours and hours of wasteful YouTube streams<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    (Yes, there is some good upbuilding of YouTube streams out there, but watching excessive amounts of YouTube, whilst you actually have to be focussing on the things that matter, eventually becomes wasteful.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Thinking upon these things just humbles me and brings me again to a place of repentance before God, not just in me building my relationship with Him, for If you build God\u2019s House (It can refer to the Church – the gathering of Believers (Ecclesia) or yourself being a temple – a representation of Christ here on earth), God will (and it’s a God-promise), build your house – to provide in all your needs and restoring all things lost along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What I take from all this is that taking a rest is a necessity, not just to recover your strength, but also to recover your soul, and your God-given purpose, in the place of rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Furthermore, I believe God wants to challenge some of you reading this, even myself, to intentionally make time for him and build your relationship (and mine) with Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    As a final thought, Naomi and Ruth were able to find sustenance to survive as foreigners and strangers of Boaz\u2019s field, which he left to rest for the seventh year as per the instruction found in Exodus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    (Read the book of Ruth for yourself. Even though God is not mentioned once in this book of the Bible, you can clearly see the tell-tale signs of His character throughout.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    So may God present you at the right time the rest and sustenance so that you can have a rested restart.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
